Donald Zak

Donald R. Zak, Ph.D., is the Burton V. Barnes Collegiate Professor of Ecology and the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the School for Environment and Sustainability, and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Prior to his arrival in 1988, he served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior at the University of Minnesota. His research has elucidated connections between the composition and function of soil microbial communities and the importance of microbial activity in regulating ecosystem-level processes. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications, and has mentored 11 postdoctoral scholars, 12 doctoral students, 20 master’s students and 5 undergraduate honor’s students. Prof. Zak has been appointed to the editorial boards of Ecology, Ecological Monographs, Ecological Applications and Soil Science Society of America Journal, and he is currently principal investigator on grants from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy. He was named the Francis Clark Distinguished Lecturer in 2010, an award given by the Soil Science Society of American for research excellence in soil biology and biochemistry. In 2017, he was named a Fellow of the American Associate for the Advancement of Science for outstanding contributions to the fields of terrestrial and microbial ecology, particularly for experimental work identifying mechanisms of ecosystem response to environmental change. He was named Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in 2017, a university-wide recognition for excellence and innovation in undergraduate education.
