Trip Highlights

They rank as two of South America’s greatest treasures, and a small group tour is the natural selection for both: the enigmatic ruins at Machu Picchu, where we overnight at an intimate on-site hotel; and the fascinating Galapagos Islands, Darwin’s “living laboratory,” for a four-night island-based adventure.

Exclusive Departure: this departure is considered exclusive and the participants are U-M travelers, who consist of alums, family and friends.

Itinerary

Day 1

Depart the U.S. for Lima, Peru

We depart today for Lima, the capital of Peru. Upon arrival late this evening, we meet our Odysseys Unlimited representative and transfer to our hotel, where rooms are ready for our late arrival.

Accommodations: Westin Lima Hotel

Day 2

Lima

This morning we meet our Peruvian tour director who gives us a briefing about the journey ahead. We then set out to discover the treasures of this historic capital city. Originally founded by famed Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro, Lima has grown into one of the largest cities in the Americas and is home to nearly one third of Peru’s population, along with a multitude cultural, educational, and religious sites. The first stop on our tour is a prominent art museum, where we encounter a unique collection of artifacts including an acclaimed collection of erotic pre-Columbian sculptures and figurines, a gold and jewelry gallery, and a textile room. Then a mid-afternoon tour introduces us to the highlights of both colonial and contemporary Lima, including Plaza de Armas, the bustling main square; Government Palace, occupying the site of the palace built by Pizarro; the Cathedral; rebuilt in 1758 after an earthquake destroyed the original building; and Santo Domingo Church, which dates to the 16th century. This evening we enjoy a welcome dinner together.
